Meeting online. Canceled Student of the Month. Certificates will be sent to students. Rotary International theme: Sanitation and Hygiene Dr. Heather Lobban-Viravong will be inducted into Collegeville Rotary as our newest member. Our member Kathie Kerper will speak to students about her work with Special Olympics. About Kathie's involvement with Special Olympics in her own words: "I have been involved in Special Olympics since 1978. I have served as Event Coordinator for North Penn Special Olympics, a county-wide Track and Field event for school age children which was at North Penn High School for 39 years, I have coached Swimming, Track, Roller Skating, Roller Hockey, and Basketball. I currently coach and am coordinator of our Montgomery Knights Basketball Program. Special Olympics was developed in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Since it's start as a track event, it has blossomed into over 22 different sports. Athletes who are intellectually disabled must have a medical, and must train for a minimum of 8 weeks. They then move on to County, Sectional, and State Events. In addition, Special Olympics is part of the Inclusion Movement. They have Unified Sports both for school age athletes and for athletes who are no longer in school. This pairs Special Olympians with their non-disabled peers. Together they compete in bocce, basketball, soccer softball, and track.
My favorite part of Special Olympics is watching our athletes grow in their skills and in their ability to socialize with others."
