Shirlee Howe is the Montgomery and Chester County Coordinator for Children First. She will be discussing the lastest legislation for education reform in Pennsylvania. More information can be found at childrenfirstpa.org. Shirlee's focus at Children First is to engage the community in expanding high quality educational initiatives in PA. Shirlee will discuss both the early learning and K-12 statewide campaigns Children First leads on and how new, non-traditional stakeholders can help make positive change for kids in PA. She'll discuss the school funding trial debated in Commonwealth Court last year, the Science of Reading legislation and other legislative priorities for the upcoming legislative session in Harrisburg.

Asst. Professor of Philosophy & the Humanities/ Associate Dean for Civic Learning/ Bonner Director/ Project Pericles Program Director. Christian graduated from Ursinus in 1998 and received a Doctorate of Theology from Harvard Divinity School in 2008. Christian then returned to Ursinus to direct the College’s civic engagement initiatives. He has directed the Ursinus Bonner Program since 2008 and was instrumental in the creation of UCARE—the Ursinus Center for Advocacy, Responsibility, and Engagement. Christian teaches in the Philosophy and Religious Studies department and his scholarly writing has focused on examining the philosophical and moral underpinnings of human rights discourse. He worked with his colleagues to create a minor in Peace and Social Justice Studies.. This year he received the Ursinus College Alumni Award for Service to Humanity in recognition of his efforts at Ursinus to build a culture dedicated to civic engagement. Christian met his wife, the Reverend Janel Reppert Rice, at Ursinus and they married in 2001. Christian and Janel have a daughter named Sophie.

Peace Fellowships Master's degreeIs the master’s degree fellowship right for me?The ideal candidate is academically strong, has a bachelor’s degree in a related field, and has work experience in peace and development. We are looking for early-career candidates who demonstrate a commitment to peace and conflict resolution, can undertake extensive reading and research, and can participate actively within a diverse cohort of students. Successful candidates have a record of prior achievements in peacebuilding as well as the potential for future growth and impact as leaders in the field resulting from their participation in the fellowship. After the program, candidates should be willing to share their own work and experience, staying in touch with peace fellows in their region and maintaining strong connections with Rotary members. EligibilityMaster’s degree candidates must also:
Candidates must have a gap of at least three years between the completion of their most recent academic degree program (undergraduate or graduate degree) and their intended start date for the fellowship. Candidates currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program are not eligible to apply. Rotary Peace Fellows who have completed the certificate program, or a Global Grant Scholarship, must wait three years between the end date of that program and their intended start date for the fellowship. We encourage people with disabilities and people from other diverse backgrounds to apply. Rotary provides reasonable accommodations as needed to people with disabilities.
